How to Choose a Wiper Blade Spine Material

Scope: Material descriptions and market positioning below are based on supplier information supplied for this article. They are not independent test results or universal grade rankings. Confirm the exact standard, chemical composition, heat treatment, dimensions, coating and test method in the purchase specification.
Beam-style blades: what the spring strips do
Beam-style blades commonly use two symmetrical flexible steel strips to distribute pressure along the rubber element. The grade is only one part of performance: thickness, geometry, heat treatment, corrosion protection and quality control also matter.
SK5: a common mid- to upper-range option
Supplier information positions SK5 as a higher-carbon tool steel used when stiffness and pressure retention are priorities. It needs controlled heat treatment and a protective finish, such as blackening or zinc plating, because it can rust. Ask for the actual material specification and validation data for the finished blade.
65Mn: an economy option
65Mn spring steel is positioned as a lower-cost, flexible option for price-sensitive programs. The grade alone cannot establish fatigue life or long-term spring retention. Compare supplier test conditions and results rather than relying on a general claim that one grade lasts longer.
SUP9 / SUP9A and SK6 / SK7
SUP9/SUP9A may be specified for particular OEM programs; SK6/SK7 may be used in selected multi-section designs. These are not automatic upgrades. Confirm the customer specification, steel standard, heat treatment and finished-part requirements.
Stainless steel: corrosion trade-offs
SUS304 may be considered where exposure to moisture or salt is a concern. It may cost more, and its elastic modulus can be lower than that of some carbon steels, which can affect force at the same thickness. Lower-cost 201 stainless steel should not be assumed to match 304 in corrosion resistance or spring behavior. Request application-specific test data.
Conventional bracket-style blades
Traditional bracket-style blades use a support structure rather than the same flexible spine arrangement. Cold-rolled steel such as SPCC may be used for the multi-point frame, with a protective finish such as zinc plating or electrophoretic coating. Confirm coating and corrosion-test details for the intended use.
What to check before comparing quotes
| Material | Positioning in supplied information | Confirm before selection |
|---|---|---|
| SK5 | Mid- to upper-range | Exact standard, heat treatment, thickness and corrosion protection |
| 65Mn | Economy | Material specification, fatigue-test method and results |
| SUP9/SUP9A | Program-specific OEM option | Customer-approved grade and process |
| SK6/SK7 | Selected multi-section designs | Finished assembly requirements |
| SUS304 | Corrosion-exposed applications to assess | Corrosion conditions, force, dimensions and cost |
| 201 stainless steel | Lower-cost option | Grade, finish and application suitability |
Put the blade construction, grade and applicable standard, strip width and thickness, heat treatment, surface finish, corrosion exposure and requested test methods in the RFQ. For coastal or salt-exposed use, ask for test conditions and reports; the word “stainless” alone is not a specification.
Frequently asked questions
Is SK5 always better than 65Mn?
No. The steel grade alone does not establish finished-product performance. Processing, geometry, coating and test results also matter.
Is SUS304 always the right choice for coastal markets?
Not automatically. Evaluate exposure, design, required force, dimensions and cost, then review relevant corrosion-test data.
Does stainless steel always produce less pressure?
No blanket conclusion is possible from the material name. Elastic modulus is one factor; strip dimensions and finished geometry also affect force.
What should a buyer include in an RFQ?
Specify construction, material standard and grade, dimensions, heat treatment, finish, application conditions and required verification documents.
